Can Leadership Skills be Learned?

Can leadership skills be learned?

How can we define the leadership in our daily life? Among our peers, colleagues, and family members, we can easily single out the natural leaders. Typically, these persons can unite all other people around their ideas, activities, world outlook, good appearance, humor, and something else. In the majority of cases, they have a gift of gab, high communication skills, a lot of optimism, and know strong and weak points of the surrounding them peeps and folks, in order to manipulate them, from time to time. The majority of the modern people become more and more self centered, Internet absorbed, and profession oriented fellows. They could be excellent geeks, but leadership is not their hobby horse. Remember your school and college years, remember your childhood and teen years leaders. Highly intelligent and shy girls, and boys, had never been among the natural leaders, who fought bravely for the titles of Alpha male and Alpha female champs. Typically among them there were sport athletes and cheerleaders. Consider a Leadership Training Program to evaluate your leadership quotient.

Business and management leaders differ a bit from natural leaders. From time to time, you see their white feather, and start realizing, that in spite of all their efforts, leadership is not their cup of tea. Nevertheless, could leadership skills could be taught or not? The practice shows that the yesterday`s grey mice, blue stockings and snotty nerds, just in three – five years could turn into highly eloquent and will powered leaders. Unfortunately, the reverse process could happen too. Even among my school and University peers, I saw such dramatic changes. It means that leadership skills is the question of psychology and life experience. Young teachers and lectures are often not sure of themselves. Those who are forty, or even fifty years old are afraid of nothing. In case of emergency, they could start teaching any humanitarian subject, any foreign language, as a high skilled sub teachers. Even if they don`t know these disciplines and languages, they know how to work with people and how to teach them. For them it is not the first rodeo. The same relates to business community, experience means a lot. The lack of frightening barriers means a lot too.

How to develop your leadership skills?

Be emotional.

Don`t try to keep your upper lip stiff. Almost all leaders are emotional. They could press your emotional triggers and to charge you with their vision of the problem. Emotions convince faster than logical arguments. That`s why your slice of life stories, inserted in your speeches, make them more passionate and convincing.

Don`t lie a lot.

People will notice it, earlier or later. Honesty is the best policy. If you believe in your affair open heartedly, all those, who surround you, will believe in you too. High morale smells good, evil tricks stink a lot.

Be positive.

The majority of leaders are highly optimistic fellows. Good joke could help you more in uniting your team spirit than elaborate and sophisticated evil or pessimistic remarks. If you start laughing, everybody starts laughing with you. If you start weeping, usually, you start doing it alone. It is a kind of old truth.

Be definite.

True leaders don’t daydream a lot, they work as powerful and straightforward bulldozers. Creativity guys could ignore everybody and shoot the arrows of their uniqueness and originality in different directions. Leaders of management are completely different, their employees perform their tasks. And the better they are organized, and the better they understand their project goals, the faster and better results they could achieve. As Peter Drucker once said, “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results, not attributes.”

It is very important for good leaders. The same relates to children. In some families, parents always tell their kids that they are talented, gifted, and extraordinary. In other families, parents always call their kids as idiots, jerks and freaks. It is not surprising that in the first kind of families, children will turn into highly motivated think tanks, or just highly professional people. In the second type of families, it happens considerably more seldom. The same relates to the business community. More highly motivated employees show considerably better results, a lot of sociological experiments prove this simple idea.

The leadership topic is a highly sensitive topic. However, our own experience can tell us a lot. The experience of top business colleges and Universities could teach us even more. If you are a natural born leader, that`s great. And if you want to acquire the leadership skills, that`s not a problem. Your will power, experience, and sense of purpose will help you to get everything, including the so needed leadership skills.
